This model was one of the first to incorporate Nike AIR technology, standing out for its unique design which includes a "window" in the heel revealing the air bubble. Inspired by the modern architecture of the Center Pompidou in Paris, Tinker Hatfield imagined a shoe which, like the transparent structures of the center, clearly displays its technical innovation. Initially launched in the "White/Varsity Red" colorway, this model has been reissued several times, including during Air Max Day, highlighting its iconic status.
Evolution and Expansion of the Air Max Range Following the resounding success of the Air Max 1, Nike continued to expand the Air Max line with new silhouettes, each model pushing the boundaries of performance and visual innovation. Nike's objective was clear: improve performance while increasing the visibility of the air bubble, an element that has become a signature of the range.
Air Max 90
Introduced in 1990, the Air Max 90 is famous for its "Infrared" colorway, one of the most emblematic of the series. With its successful collaborations and bold colorways, this silhouette has become a pillar of the Air Max collection.
Air Max 95
Created by Sergio Lozano in 1995, the Air Max 95 is inspired by human anatomy, recalling the structure of the rib cage. It is notable for being the first in the line to feature a visible Air unit in the forefoot and rearfoot, making the shoe popular among collectors and even, curiously, among London burglars according to police reports from the time.
Air Max 97
Launched in 1997 and designed by Christian Tresser, the Air Max 97 is inspired by Japanese bullet trains and features a full-length Air-Sole unit and a captivating wavy design. This model enjoyed particular success in Italy, giving rise to several special editions.
Air Max 98
Developed by Sergio Lozano, the Air Max 98 shares the sole of the 97 but innovates with a distinct upper. Launched in 1998, it has been the focus of several collaborations, including with Supreme. Its OG “Gundam” colorway is inspired by a Japanese animated series about fighting robots, reflecting the pop culture popularity of the time.
